Sunset Tree Locations

Close to the ocean, the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco is tough on trees -- the soil is largely nutrient-poor sand, and there's lots of wind and fog. In part for this reason, many blocks of the Sunset are completely devoid of street trees. But there are species that do well here. Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) does very well in this neighborhood (at least east of 30th Street), as does Blackwood Acacia (Acacia melanoxylon) for those who want larger trees. For trees nearest the ocean, New Zealand Christmas trees (Metrosideros excelsus) are a great choice -- although they do have a tendency to lift sidewalks after 10-15 years.
