Tree Survey

Selecting an appropriate tree for planting in San Francisco can often be a challenge, due to the difficult conditions often found here:  sidewalks, constant wind, poor soils, pollution, and increased risk of vehicular accidents or vandalism.  During a four year period from 1997 to 2001, I personally surveyed almost 4,000 trees previously planted by Friends of the Urban Forest, with the objective of systematically monitoring the growth, survival, health and appearance of street trees to evaluate species performance and inform the tree selection process.  The goal?  To find out which trees were surviving and thriving.
