Landmark trees

Here's a list of the best trees I've been able to find in San Francisco, by species (213 different species listed, and still growing).  Where more than one tree is listed, the best specimen is the first one listed.  Please email me with additional nominations, and help build this database.   For photos of examples of many of these species (but not the individual trees identified below), visit Friends of the Urban Forest's tree photos page (trees listed alphabetically by latin name) or use the Selecttree database.  

Note:  to be listed here, a tree must be easily identified by reference to a street address in San Francisco.  There are many more trees in San Francisco's parks that aren't so easily located, and so haven't been listed.  I've also identified the trees that I think are particularly spectacular like this!

Aesculus californica (California Buckeye) 2694 McAllister (at corner of McAllister and Willard North) in the Richmond.  This tree was almost removed due to development in 1999, but the tree-sympathetic property owner changed the development plans, saving the tree.  Also 124 Lower Terrace in the Upper Market neighborhood, and in 500 block of Ramsell, near Garfield, in the OMI neighborhood.

x Chitalpa tashkentensis (chitalpa 'pink dawn') 800 Carolina/20th in Potrero Hill (this is a bi-generic cross between the desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) and catalpa (Catalpa bignoniodes).  The initial hybrids between Catalpa and Chilopsis were created in Uzbekistan in 1964 and introduced into the United States by Robert Hebb of the New York Botanic Garden in 1977.)

Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Palm) lining Market from Castro to Valencia; lining the Embarcadero; also the principal palm on the Dolores Street median.  The 13 Canary Island Palm trees on Quesada just west of 3rd Street are also standouts.  They're maintained by the Quesada Gardens Initiative (www.quesadagardens.org), a resident-led, all-volunteer group that is building community in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood through greening, sustainable food production, public art and events.
