Bailey’s acacia (Acacia baileyana) at 17th and Shrader

First Sign of San Francisco Spring!

January 24, 2023 by Michael Sullivan

The first street tree to bloom in San Francisco is Bailey’s acacia (Acacia baileyana), and it’s at peak bloom right now. Native to a tiny area in New South Wales, Australia, it’s popular on northern California streets for its brilliant yellow foliage. These two are in Cole Valley, one at the corner of Shrader and Grattan and one at Shrader and 17th Streets (the latter tree was the one photographed by Matt Ritter in his fantastic book, “A Californian's Guide to the Trees Among Us”).
