cook pine (Araucaria columnaris)

SF's largest cook pine - leaning towards the equator!

September 27, 2025 by Michael Sullivan

I recently discovered a huge cook pine (Araucaria columnaris) in the Golden Gate Park panhandle - I think it’s the largest in San Francisco. Thanks to professor Matt Ritter at Cal Poly, we’ve learned that these trees always lean towards the equator. The tree is on the south side of the panhandle, just off the path that is parallel with Fell Street, and between Clayton and Cole streets. This one is duly leaning south!
